SPOTLIGHT

Spotlight: Schowalter Villa
With programming, facilities, staff and care so perfect, you can
call it, well, seamless...
What does a retirement community, childcare center, restaurant,
wellness center, and a college have in common? The answer would
be a resounding nothing, if you were referring to any place
other than Schowalter Villa, in Hesston, KS.
Webster dictionary defines the word ‘seamless’ as something
perfectly consistent, without noticeable seams. Schowalter Villa
is the epitome of just that: a seamless campus, with seamless
care, all in a seemingly seamless town.
Aside from an award-winning health care facility, which features
physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as weekly
visits from physicians, Schowalter Villa has something that no
other Nursing Home has: a strong sense of community.
Hesston is bridging the gap between the young and the old every
day, thanks to the partnership between Hesston College and
Schowalter Villa, and the intergenerational facility it plays
host to. Schowalter residents are able to attend classes at
Hesston College, while students are able to volunteer at
Schowalter, and learn from the years of experience and wisdom
that the residents have to offer. To bring all of this closer
together (whether it be feasable or not), construction on a
“Journey of Life” walkway is set to begin in Fall 2006. This
ten-foot wide walkway will connect Schowalter Villa, Dyck
Arboretum and Hesston college, and feature gazebos, benches, and
signs that signify and describe the different stages of life,
for residents and students to enjoy alike.
Schowalter Villa has also opened an intergenerational center,
which houses the Hesston Community Childcare Center, and blends
the generations, all the while encouraging a healthy
relationship between children and seniors at Schowalter. Linking
the retirement community with the intergenerational center is
Schowalter Villa’s “Main Street,” which features an ice cream
parlor, a bank, gift shop and more.
Outside the main walls, lie numerous luxurious senior
communities, including Arbor Vista cottages, Lake Vista patio
homes, Lakeside Village suites, and Hickory Homes apartments.
All communities and Schowalter residents are welcome to a
beautiful lakeside view, as well as access to Hesston Wellness
Center. The center features a heated indoor swimming pool,
relaxing hot tub, a state-of-the-art excercise facility, an
indoor walking path, massage therapy, physical therapy, and a
full range of classes from pottery, woodworking, group fitness,
lectures and more.
But perhaps the most important and stand-out feature of
Schowalter Villa is the excellent care given to its residents.
Superior memory care, adult day care, respite care, health care
and assisted living designed for seniors who need the best in
medical care, and want the best in emotional caring.
From kids and classes to care and community, Schowalter Villa
really has it all.
Schowalter Villa is located at 200 West Cedar and can be reached
at (620) 327-0400.

Spotlight: Hesston Golf Park
Hesston Golf Park is nowhere near your typical, municipal,
daily-fee golf club. From the par three’s that average
200-yards, to the fantastic, all-weather practice facilities, to
the intensive training programs available from the professional
teaching staff, Hesston sets itself apart as among the best.
Why else would 90 percent of the players who play Hesston come
from outside the city limits even though the two closest major
cities, Wichita and Hutchinson, are at least 25-miles away? Add
in the fact that you can get a foursome around in less than four
hours, playing course conditions that far exceed expectations,
all for $60, and you’ve got your answer.
Hesston is not the most difficult course you can play. There are
no spectacular elevation changes on volcanic islands or seals
barking from the Pacific Coast.
There is no Amen Corner or Hogan’s Alley. This is Central Kansas
golf where the layout is relatively flat and the closest you’ll
get to the coast is knocking one along the banks of the Middle
Emma Creek that separates front-9 from back.
But what makes Hesston great is that it isn’t trying to be more
than it is and when superintendent, Randy Bachman and head pro,
Scott Welsh were given an opportunity to make Hesston the best
municipal golf course it could be, they excelled.
That’s why the pro-shop offers custom club fitting, and why
there are year-round, all-weather practice facilities. That’s
why you can take part in the America’s Favorite Golf Schools,
and why the pace-of-play is so great and why the conditions are
always immaculate. That’s why Hesston Golf Park has placed
itself so far above the mark of what used to pass for great
municipal golf in Kansas, and that’s why people are willing to
drive 25 minutes to Hesston rather than five-minutes to play at
their local course. It’s the over-all package of really good
golf combined with a really fantastic, all-around golf
experience. Hesston Golf Park is located at 520 Yost Drive. For
